All those yard signs!

August 27, 2024

Yard signs are everywhere, promoting homes for sale, community yard sales, or school events. But their numbers increase exponentially during an election season. Unlike other community signs, these have no purpose beyond the campaigns.

One innovative Florida community has initiated a Campaign Sign Recycling Program. The Leon County Elections Office and Office of Resource Stewardship, the League of Women Voters of Tallahassee, and Marpan Recycling have all joined forces to provide collection and recycling for the discarded signs and their metal stakes. The materials are handled separately.

“Campaign signs are part of the American election experience, but no one wants to see old and faded signs weeks after the election is over,” said Mark S. Earley, Supervisor of Elections for Leon County, announcing the sign recycling program. Leon County is currently collecting signs from their August 2024 primary. Collection points are at local libraries, the county’s election center and hazardous waste drop-off locations, and Marpan Recycling.

Way to go, Leon County, for removing this special plastic and metal waste from your waste stream! We vote for recycling in 2024!
