If you host a big holiday meal this season, make sure to keep fats, oils, and grease (FOG) out of your drains. Nothing puts a damper on the holidays like dealing with a clogged sink or sewer backup at home during your big event!
When FOG goes down the drain–and into sewers–it congeals, coating the inside of pipes and leading to blockages and sewer backups. Follow these easy steps to dispose of FOG properly:
How to handle fats, oils, and grease
- First, never put fats, oils, or grease down the drain.
- Have just a little FOG? Soak up the excess oil and grease with a napkin or paper towel and toss it into your waste can. Or, if your community allows, add it to your organics cart. Check with your solid waste authority before doing this.
- Are you doing some deep frying at home? Allow oil to cool, pour it into a sturdy container, like a milk jug or coffee tin, and place it in your mixed waste cart.
- Never put liquid FOG into any carts or dumpsters without putting it into a container first.
- You can also mix small quantities of FOG with absorbent materials such as kitty litter, coffee grounds, or shredded paper. Then, put the mixture in a plastic bag and put it in your trash cart or dumpster.
Follow these easy options, and your holiday meals will be FOG-free!
